Jaw surgery in Darwin - a solution for severe bite and jaw issues

At Darwin Orthodontics, we provide jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) for patients with serious bite problems or jaw misalignment that cannot be corrected with braces or clear aligners alone. This treatment is used to address conditions such as severe overbites, underbites, open bites, and facial asymmetries - enhancing both function and facial appearance.

What does
jaw surgery involve?

Orthognathic surgery is a multi-disciplinary approach. At Darwin Orthodontics, Dr Yann Taddei works closely with a qualified Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeon to carefully plan your treatment and ensure the best possible outcome.

The process typically includes three main phases:

  • Pre-surgical braces: Braces are worn for approximately 12 months before surgery to move the teeth into the correct position for realignment.
  • Surgical correction: The surgery is performed in hospital by the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeon under general anaesthetic, with Dr Yann Taddei collaborating throughout the planning process.
  • Post-surgical refinement: After a two-week recovery period, you'll return to Darwin Orthodontics to continue with braces for a further 4–6 months to fine-tune your bite.

It’s important to note that jaw growth must be complete before orthognathic surgery can be performed - typically around 16 years of age for females and 18 years or older for males.

Is jaw surgery
right for me?

Jaw surgery may be recommended for patients who experience:

  • Severe overbite or underbite
  • Facial imbalance or asymmetry
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking or biting properly
  • Jaw joint pain or chronic discomfort
  • Open bite or jaw misalignment
  • Concerns not correctable with braces or aligners alone

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, our team will carry out a comprehensive consultation to assess whether jaw surgery is the best treatment path for your needs.
